The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) delayed its decision on whether to approve three Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), jointly filed by BlackRock, Invesco, and Bitwise last week. The ETFs proposed by the investment giants had been widely followed since the initial applications were filed in January 2020.
1. SEC Postpones Bitcoin ETF Decision For Three Supplicants
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has decided to delay the decision for the approval of three Bitcoin exchange-traded-fund (ETF) applications. VanEck SolidX Bitcoin Trust, Bitwise Asset Management and Wilshire Phoenix have all been pushed back from their August dates to October 2019.
Why the Sec Decision Was Postponed
The SEC is seeking for more public input on these decisions that will have handled billions of dollars in investments. Additionally, the agency has requested more details from the applicants and an in-depth analysis of the products proposed. The SEC wrote in its commission:
- The commission is instituting proceedings […] to allow for additional analysis of the proposed rule change’s consistency with Section 6(b)(5) of the Exchange Act.
- The Commission seeks and encourages interested persons to provide comments.
- The Commission is providing interested persons with an additional 45 days in which to submit such comments.
All three of the proposed Bitcoin ETF have been battling with acceptance and scrutiny with the SEC for many months. Since regulators are trying methods to ensure investors’ safety and prevent market manipulation, it is likely that the decision in the case of the three Bitcoin ETF applications will be finally reached by October.
2. BlackRock, Invesco, Bitwise Await Ruling on Filed Proposals
Asset managers BlackRock, Invesco and Bitwise have all put pressure on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to approve their recent proposals. The proposals, if approved, could lead to the creation of several new ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds), including the first-ever cryptocurrency-backed funds. This would be a major step forward for the digital asset sector.
What’s at Stake for the Asset Managers? BlackRock, one of the world’s largest asset managers, had filed for a fund that would provide “investment exposure to a basket of constituent cryptocurrency assets” back in January. Invesco, another giant in the asset management business, also petitioned for similar funds. Meanwhile, Bitwise, a cryptocurrency-focused asset manager, proposed modernizing the ETF framework to include bitcoin-backed funds.
If the SEC grants approval for any of these proposals, it could be a major win for all three firms. Not only would the approvals demonstrate the SEC’s confidence in cryptocurrency, but the ETFs could also become hugely lucrative investments for asset managers. Here are some of the potential benefits they could reap:
- Possibility of high returns
- Attract investors seeking new ETFs and diversified cryptocurrency-backed portfolios
- Generate more exposure for digital assets
Now it’s up to the SEC to make their ruling. Until then, the asset management giants will have to wait and see if their requests are granted.
3. SEC Cites Need for Further Evaluation in Delaying ETF Decision
Formal Guidance Requested for ETF Decision
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is seeking clarification and formal guidance before making a decision on the listing and trading of exchange traded funds (ETFs) related to digital assets like Bitcoin. In response to an application for a Bitcoin ETF filed by Wilshire Phoenix Funds, the SEC published a statement last week that it was going to delay the decision until further evaluation of the market and investors had taken place in order to make a more informed judgement.
In its statement, the SEC identified a number of issues that need to be addressed, including valuation, liquidity, custody, arbitrage, and potential market manipulation. The Commission cited that these areas have not yet been addressed sufficiently for a conclusive judgement to be made, and therefore formal guidance is required.
In addition to requiring certain elements to be addressed to its satisfaction, the SEC also expressed its desire to ensure that investors are “protected by their legal and financial standards.” This sentiment has been shared by ETF experts, who feel that it is important for the Commission to have the necessary data to make a “well-informed and galaxy decision.”
4. Market Watchers Staying Attentive as Details of Possible ETFs Emerge
With the buzz around exchange-traded funds (ETFs) continuing to grow, market watchers are staying attentive as more details emerge. The funds, considered a blend between mutual funds and stocks, offer the possibility of higher returns and greater liquidity to investors. But what do ETFs mean to the market in general?
ETFs are seen as an attractive and potentially lucrative vehicle for investors, due to their low expenses and ability to be traded like stocks. The funds also allow investors the advantage of achieving diversification at a low cost, while having the flexibility to invest in a wide range of assets. At the same time, ETFs raise the prospect of increased volatility in the markets, due to the large amounts of money that can be quickly invested or withdrawn.
Investors should keep a sharp eye on the developments of ETFs, to ensure they are well-informed of any possible changes and effects on the market. Here are some key points they need to be aware of:
- Costs: ETFs tend to have lower costs than some other investment options.
- Liquidity: ETFs can be traded like stocks, offering a higher level of liquidity than many mutual funds.
- Diversification: Investors have the opportunity to invest in a wide range of assets and reach diversification quickly.
- Volatility: Increased volatility in the markets could be upheld due to the large amounts of money that can be quickly invested or withdrawn.
The SEC’s delayed decision to approve cryptocurrency ETFs has left traders and investors in a state of limbo. Cryptocurrency advocates will be eagerly awaiting the SEC’s eventual decision, as it is evident that it could have a significant impact on the world of cryptocurrency and digital asset trading.
