Meet Bitcoin’s trailblazers: 2009-2017. Uncover their remarkable stories.

Cypherpunk Since its inception in 2009, Bitcoin has become an increasingly beloved cryptocurrency. Behind this success lies an untold story of the Bitcoin trailblazers who pushed the envelope to make Bitcoin a reality.

In 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto set the wheels in motion by developing the Bitcoin white paper. This document outlined Bitcoin’s underlying technology and mechanisms: “A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” as he titled it. Soon afterward, software engineer Laszlo Hanyecz posted in a Bitcoin forum that he had ordered pizza by paying with 10,000 BTC. This historic transaction, which is now known as the first real-world bitcoin purchase ever, marked a giant leap forward in the history of Bitcoin.

In 2010, developer Gavin Andresen was the lead developer and worked diligently to improve the underlying Bitcoin code. Under his guidance, many of the features that the Bitcoin payment system enjoys today were implemented. Furthering his impact, Andresen started the Bitcoin Foundation, which is now an internationally recognized organization that works to advance Bitcoin development.

In 2011, Marc Andreesen, a famous venture capitalist, invested in Bitcoin. His firm, Andreesen Horowitz, provided much-needed investment capital for Bitcoin-related projects. This investment, along with his evangelism for Bitcoin, helped to catapult Bitcoin into mainstream consciousness and to become the digital asset we know it as today.

In 2013, entrepreneur Charlie Shrem was one of the most prominent Bitcoin pioneers. Shrem founded BitInstant, the first established digital currency exchange. His aim was to make Bitcoin accessible and easy to use. While Shrem ran into legal issues in 2014, his work is widely recognized by the Bitcoin community as original and groundbreaking.

Also in 2013, software engineer Vitalik Buterin wrote his Ethereum whitepaper. This whitepaper was foundational in the development of the first platform for decentralized applications and digital assets. Buterin’s vision for blockchain technology directly led to the rise of smart contracts and the famous cryptocurrency Ether.

In 2014, the Bitcoin market was booming as it enjoyed both increased user adoption and huge increases in price. This brought out many different figureheads in the Bitcoin world including Brock Pierce, Roger Ver, Barry Silbert, and the Winklevoss twins. These trailblazers launched a number of innovative projects and were key in driving the overall growth of Bitcoin.

Finally, in 2017 we witness the launch of Bitcoin futures, a new financial instrument which opened the door to derivate Bitcoin trading and continues to fuel the feverish price action that Bitcoin has enjoyed since its launch in 2009.

These Bitcoin trailblazers have played an indispensable role in the development of Bitcoin and are well deserving of recognition. Their groundbreaking work has, in many respects, propelled Bitcoin to become the de facto digital asset of the 21st century.
