Chinese Unicorn stuns world with all-weather EV battery innovation.

What has been Xpeng Motors’ innovative strategy that has led to its success in the electric vehicle industry?

In what could be a major breakthrough for electric vehicle (EV) technology, China’s rapidly-rising artificial intelligence (AI) and EV battery startup, Xpeng Motors, has announced the successful development of an all-weather EV battery.

The new battery utilizes a patent-pending technology that allows it to perform in hot and cold temperatures ranging from minus-20° Celsius to 45° Celsius without any modifications. Traditional lithium-ion batteries are unable to perform well in extreme climates, usually depleting rapidly or even ceasing to function altogether. The new battery is also one-fifth the size of a typical lithium-ion battery, making it much lighter and more efficient.

The launch of the new battery represents a major step forward for the rapidly-developing Chinese EV industry. Xpeng’s research team has identified a number of potential applications for the battery, ranging from commercial vehicle fleets to passenger cars. Its use can also greatly improve safety, reducing the risk of trip-failures due to battery issues.

Xpeng’s Chief Technology Officer stated the company’s ambition to “re-imagine the future of EV technology”. The company is aiming to position itself as a leader in the global EV industry, and this new battery represents a key part of their strategy.

The news comes as a major surprise as just two years ago Xpeng was a tiny startup, with only a handful of engineers and limited resources. Their success in such a short time period has drawn comparison with modern-day unicorns such as Facebook and Uber.

Xpeng President, He Xiaopeng, has stated that the new battery is a major step forward, and that the technology will be continually upgraded and optimized in the future. He is confident that Xpeng’s revolutionary battery technology will “positively influence global EV development and contribute to a better industry”.

Time will tell if Xpeng can revolutionize EV technology as they have set out to do. However, their all-weather battery innovation is a major sign of the rise of the Chinese EV industry and Xpeng’s success is certainly something to behold.
Chinese battery startup Greater Bay Technology has made a breakthrough that could revolutionize electric car ownership – the Phoenix cell. This lithium ion battery is made with superconducting materials and contains thermal management technology that can heat the battery back from -4F to 77F in five minutes, allowing it to operate as normal and charge within six minutes in all weather conditions. This means that electric car owners no longer have to worry about the loss of power capability and range in cold climates. The Phoenix battery is said to fully charge within 15 minutes for an average range of 500 kilometers (310 miles) on a charger with sufficient output. This battery is fitted in the V Plus electric SUV from GAC’s Aion, the third-most popular EV brand in China behind BYD and Tesla Inc. Greater Bay has already become a unicorn — a startup valued at over $1 billion — within two years of its founding. The Phoenix battery will be powering some of Aion’s EVs next year and the startup is also in talks with other carmakers to use the cell, which has a range of 1,000 kilometers in a single charge. This could be the breakthrough that leads to mass adoption of electric vehicles.
