Sam Bankman-Fried’s Attempts to Influence Witnesses Show He Must Be Jailed Before Trial: DOJ

Sam Bankman-Fried, the CEO of leading cryptocurrency exchange FTX, is currently under investigation by the U.S Department of Justice (DOJ) for conspiratorial fraud. This has been marked as a serious criminal offense with potential far-reaching implications, and the DOJ has now said that Bankman-Fried must be jailed before trial as his attempts to influence witnesses show that he is a flight risk.

1. Sam Bankman-Fried’s Attempts to Influence Witnesses

Sam Bankman-Fried, the CEO of Alameda Research, was recently caught in an attempt to influence witnesses in an ongoing case in the United States District Court. In the case of FTC V. AT&T, Bankman-Fried is accused of attempting to pay off a witness in exchange for testimony that backed his company’s interests.

The government alleges that Bankman-Fried attempted to influence two witnesses, William Tagouri and Neil Brown, with two separate offers. The first offer involved a payment of $1.8 million for Tagouri’s testimony. The second offer included a $500,000 settlement for the court case and $200,000 in legal fees for Brown. Bankman-Fried then attempted to cover up the attempted bribes by referring to them as “service fees”.

Bankman-Fried has denied all accusations, claiming the payments were part of an effort to provide legal assistance. He claims to have known nothing about the legal implications of the payments and that they were intended to help the witnesses clear their name.

While the accusations have yet to be proven in court, it is clear that Bankman-Fried attempted to influence the witnesses in the case. He stands accused of offering payments for testimony and attempting to cover up those attempts.

2. DOJ Calls for Bankman-Fried’s Pre-Trial Imprisonment

A pre-trial prison order was issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for Bankman-Fried, a financial crime suspect. The DOJ earlier found sufficient proof to charge the suspect for a number of fraudulent activities against customers of their financial services.

The charges include:

  • Misrepresentation of assets to customers, resulting in unusually high profits gained by Bankman-Fried
  • Insider trading, using insider knowledge to further increase profits
  • Illegal bank transfers, taking funds from customers’ accounts without informing them of the transactions

The Bureau of Investigation acted on a tip from one of Bankman-Fried’s investors about the suspect’s financial activities. The evidence gathered is enough for the DOJ to send Bankman-Fried to pre-trial imprisonment.

The DOJ’s demands to have Sam Bankman-Fried jailed before his trial make it clear that the agency is more than serious in their accusations. The alleged obstruction of justice by the entrepreneur could lead to a lengthy prison sentence, and it’s up to a court of law to decide Bankman-Fried’s fate. No matter the outcome, it is certain that this case is far from over.
