Vitalik Buterin announced plans to develop a “cypherpunk-principled” Ethereum as an addition to the existing system, intending to improve censorship resistance, zero-knowledge proof (zk) friendliness, and adopt leaner consensus mechanisms. He suggested that within five years, or potentially sooner with advancements in AI, Ethereum could transition to a new programming language, further enhancing its capabilities through upgrades to the state tree, consensus, ZK-EVM verification, and the virtual machine (VM). This initiative builds on Ethereum’s historical ability to successfully implement substantial changes in its protocol, such as the Merge to proof-of-stake consensus, and is part of a broader movement to integrate privacy and censorship resistance into blockchain technology.
