How to Wrap Bitcoin

Wrapping Bitcoin is a process that allows BTC holders to convert their native bitcoin into an ERC-20 token called Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), which lives on the Ethereum blockchain. This conversion is essential for users looking to engage in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, as Ethereum-compatible tokens enable seamless interaction with smart contracts, decentralized exchangesand various financial protocols.

How does the wrapping process work?

  • Custodial Minting: When you wrap Bitcoin, a trusted custodian securely holds your original BTC. In exchange, an equivalent amount of WBTC tokens is minted on the Ethereum blockchain.
  • Redeeming Wrapped BTC: To unwrap, users send WBTC tokens back to the custodian, who then releases the corresponding amount of Bitcoin, effectively burning the wrapped tokens.

This approach ensures a 1:1 peg between Bitcoin and Wrapped Bitcoin, maintaining value integrity while leveraging Ethereum’s ecosystem. By bridging these two ecosystems, wrapped tokens empower users to diversify Bitcoin usage beyond traditional holdings, unlocking liquidity and enabling participation in evolving DeFi markets.
