Google has spent the past two years pushing a simple rule onto news publishers: if you rent out your website’s name to outside casino, affiliate or paid-placement content, you can lose your place in search results. Crypto news has been hit hard.
Google calls the practice “site reputation abuse.” It covers sections a publisher hands to third parties, such as casino reviews or affiliate pages packed with commission links, that exist mainly to borrow the host site’s ranking. When Google acts on it, the penalty can reach far beyond the offending pages.
A major outlet’s traffic collapses
One major crypto news outlet reportedly lost about 80% of its visitors after Google pulled it from search results, falling from roughly 12 million monthly visits to about 700,000, according to 2026 reporting. The outlet had hosted a gambling section that drew outside scrutiny and removed it after the drop. Google has not publicly confirmed the exact reason.
Why this matters to readers and advertisers
Search is how most people find news. A site that depends on paid casino or affiliate content to rank is one Google update away from vanishing, and so is every advertiser who bought space there.
The Bitcoin Street Journal has never hosted that kind of content. We don’t accept gambling ads, we don’t buy traffic, and every sponsored article is clearly labeled. More than 50,000 readers a day find us on their own, through search, direct visits, RSS and Nostr.
Advertisers can read more about how our audience is built on Why Our Traffic Is Different, or see our rates on the Advertise page.
