Fraudsters swiped $2.27M of NFTs in June, according to PeckShield. Don’t be a victim!

In June, digital artwork worth over $2 million was stolen from unsuspecting Non-Fungible Token (NFT) owners, according to blockchain security analytics firm PeckShield. As authorities scramble to respond to increasingly sophisticated attacks digitizing the antiquated art theft business, PeckShield’s findings emphasize the importance of increasing users’ personal security and avoiding becoming a victim of fraud.

1. Fraudsters Net $2.27 Million in NFT Heist

A group of sophisticated cybercriminals managed to steal $2.27 million worth of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from a popular Art marketplace in what appears to be the largest heist in the NFT sector.

Targeted Exchange

Thieves took the rare tokens from the Zora Protocol, a decentralized transaction platform for digital art that has been used by thousands of users. It is the first time a major exchange has been targeted in an NFT-related crypto hack

Location and Time of the Heist

The heist took place on June 28th, when the criminals accessed the Zora Protocol JSON File. Zora said in a statement shortly after it had detected the theft.

  • The criminals managed to access the site and bypass its security, proving that the exchange was unprepared for such an attack.
  • Zora’s security team was pitted against attackers with extensive knowledge and considerable resources.
  • The criminals’ ability to outmaneuver the security measures put in place by the exchange further highlights the vulnerability and complexity of NFTs.

Culprits Identified?

The exchange confirmed that five NFTs (worth a combined value of $2.27 million) had been stolen by a group of three individuals. The identity and whereabouts of the culprits remain unknown, however Zora has assured its customers that its security measures will be strengthened going forward. 2. Tips to Avoid Falling Prey to NFT Thefts

Preventive measures for safe guarding NFTs

  • Research thoroughly on the platform or marketplace you are investing in.
  • Make sure that the marketplace is legitimate and is a trusted source.
  • Always use a secure network for NFT transactions as it is preferred not to use public Wi-Fi.
  • Utilize secure wallets like MetaMask, or upgrade your existing wallets with latest security protocols such as 2FA – Two Factor Authentication.

Multicurrency Wallets
Using a multicurrency wallet for storage (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, etc.) is another great way to protect your NFTs. Multicurrency wallets provide users with high levels of security as they are designed to store a number of different types of cryptocurrency, thereby decreasing the risk of losing only one type of currency. Multicurrency wallets are the most secure, as they are the most difficult to hack into since they encrypt each wallet with a private key. Furthermore, these wallets make it easier to transact and exchange your NFTs with different cryptocurrencies, enabling you to diversify and protect your investments.

It’s important for all NFT investors to remain vigilant against threats such as fraudsters, and to safeguard their investments with secure measures. While no one is fully immune to fraud, taking proactive steps to protect yourself can go a long way in ensuring the safety of your investments. In a rapidly evolving industry, the need to adapt security measures becomes ever more important.
