DAN: The Central Bank of Brazil recently announced that it has selected a name for its proposed Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The name it has chosen is “BRCash” – a combination of the country’s two currencies, the Real and the BRL. The project, led by Banco do Brasil and the Central Bank of Brazil, plans to launch the digital currency in late 2021. The bank is hoping that the currency will boost financial inclusion by providing low-cost and secure payments. The digital currency will be issued and backed by the Central Bank of Brazil and will be based on a distributed ledger technology and will run on a decentralized platform. Consumers will be able to use it to make payments, transfer money, and access banking services. The bank is already conducting trials with some of Brazil’s retail banks and is also exploring partnerships with leading technology companies to build the digital currency infrastructure. It is estimated that the rollout of the digital currency could generate economic benefits of up to $3 billion.
