Popular Android software developer MrRubik has unveiled his latest user interface project, dubbed PocketDeck, which is set to launch on the Google Play Store in the coming weeks
The developer officially showcased the upcoming application via YouTube on 3 July, targeting fans of classic handheld gaming consoles.
For those unfamiliar with Android launchers, these specialised utilities completely overhaul a smartphone’s native interface by altering typography, icons, widgets, and clocks.
The project follows a series of previous retro emulation releases by the same creator, including popular custom interfaces that transformed modern devices to resemble the Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PlayStation 2.
PocketDeck specifically aims to recreate the clean, spacious, and iconic floating aesthetics of Sony’s classic PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita platforms.
The single application bundles both the PSP and PS Vita user interfaces, allowing users to toggle seamlessly between the two console styles
To deliver a comprehensive handheld simulation, the system includes an installed Android application catalogue, along with dedicated libraries that support local PSP and PS Vita game storage.
It also facilitates emulator shortcut integration through external applications, allowing users to build custom folders for standard apps and emulation games alike.
The system supports original PSP theme imports, custom page backgrounds, Vita-style colour themes, local image application icons, and standard icon pack customisation.
To enhance the authentic gaming experience, the application features full controller- and gamepad-friendly navigation, alongside haptic feedback and original system sound effects
It operates completely offline by design, requiring no user accounts, tracking analytics, or telemetry data. It also provides localised photo, music, and video gallery sections.
A standout feature of the interface is the ability to construct emulator shortcuts that manifest as authentic game box art directly on the smartphone homepage. This setup allows users with sufficient device hardware and processor power to launch directly into their favourite classic titles with minimal friction.
The software will be available for public download over the coming weeks, serving as a free utility to transform modern smartphones into nostalgic portable consoles
Nostalgic gamers will be able to have the launcher on their Android devices very soon.
