X introduces Smart Cashtags, clarifies no in-app crypto trading

Elon Musk’s social media platform X is set to introduce “Smart Cashtags,” a feature aimed at enhancing the user experience for crypto and stock discussions, although the platform will not facilitate actual trading. According to Head of Product Nikita Bier, Smart Cashtags will enable users to specify digital asset ticker symbols and provide informative data tools, but X is not acting as a brokerage and is focused solely on financial data. This rollout aligns with Musk’s broader vision of creating an “everything app,” highlighted by the upcoming “X Money” payments service, which aims to centralize all monetary transactions within the platform. Despite securing money transmitter licenses in over 40 U.S. states through its subsidiary X Payments, the initiative faces scrutiny from New York lawmakers concerned about Musk’s ties to government.
