Nearly 2,000 truck drivers, deemed unfit to drive on U.S. roads, have been removed following the Department of Transportation’s initiative under Operation SafeDRIVE. Conducted from January 13 to 15, the operation involved collaboration between inspectors from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and law enforcement across 26 states and Washington, D.C., and led to 56 arrests, primarily for driving under the influence and issues related to illegal immigration. Of those removed, nearly 500 truckers were disqualified for failing to meet English proficiency standards, as mandated by the Trump administration’s executive orders emphasizing this requirement for safety reasons. The crackdown comes amid heightened concerns over road safety, marked by recent incidents involving illegal immigrant drivers in fatal truck-related accidents.
