The Path We Travelled — On The Current State of 0xchan

Development has kicked the volume up to 11. If you’re part of our Discord server you already know that a lot has happened since the last blog post. And if you’re not on Discord, fear not for here comes an update — and it’s loaded.

To start things off, let me say that the UI in it’s current state could be deployed and connected to a database and it’d have read/write functionality. So once we got around to finish some more modules and introducing web3 to it, we’re going straight into testnet mode. So that’s the TL;DR. Now let’s get into the juicy bits. And yes, this is all rendered in a browser, no mockups. The content shown in the screenshots is graciously taken from 4chan, by scraping several boards with this piece of junk. The JSON file I constructed can be found on IPFS.

When you first use 0xchan, it’s set up to run in something we call “SFW Mode”. In this mode 0xchan will not automatically grab images. This also means we dropped the idea of including a “NSFW” badge for certain boards to remove clutter on the UI. Instead we now treat everything as potentially NSFW.

Start page with a visible board selection, open disclaimer and most recent posts

The visual appearance is meant to mimic the “Yotsuba B” theme on 4chan, which indicates safe for work boards. If you turn the SFW Mode off, the style will automatically switch to a “Yotsuba” inspired theme. Speaking of themes, you can even add your own styles if you so prefer or select from a limited range of pre-defined themes.

Settings page with all current settings shown

In general there are some settings for the users to play with, and quite a few more are planned for the future.

A single board gives you a yet to be defined amount (currently 10) of posts per page and displays them sorted by date of most recent reply within a thread or if no replies exist for a thread then it’s using the OP date to compare dates for sorting.

A single post has various features to enable interaction with the content by clicking different things, as shown in the image on the left. Some functions like hiding a thread and viewing a thread are obviously only available on OP and missing on regular replies.

The catalog view will pull all OPs on the current board and list them as minified objects so users can quickly find the OP they were looking for.

This view also allows to hide threads and will not automatically fetch image files when the SFW Mode is turned on.

And that’s it for now. There are some additional spicy things I haven’t shown in this post, but you’ll see them soon enough.

As always, thanks for your support ❤
