The new Prime Minister of Latvia stated that the government will not be able to fulfill all promises

The new Prime Minister of Latvia stated that the government will not be able to fulfill all promises

According to the head of the government, the first month of work has already shown how difficult it is to combine solving everyday issues with long-term reforms. “It’s quite clear that not everything will be accomplished,” said Kulbergs in an interview with the LETA agency. The Prime Minister believes that one of the main problems lies in the very organization of the government’s work. In his assessment, the government declaration turned out to be too extensive, and a significant portion of the Cabinet meetings is occupied by issues that could essentially be resolved without government involvement. This, according to Kulbergs, not only takes time away from discussing strategic decisions but also makes the responsibility for their adoption less clear. At the same time, the Prime Minister generally assesses the work of the ministers positively. However, after the first presentations of the ministries prepared for the government’s off-site meeting in Latgale at the end of May, he concluded that public administration is still mainly focused on processes rather than achieving specific measurable results. In fact, the Prime Minister made it clear that he intends to change not only the content of the government’s work but also the approach to management in the ministries. According to him, changes have already begun, although some reforms will require a revision of regulations and therefore will take a considerable amount of time. For residents, this means that some of the promises included in the government declaration may not be fully realized. At the same time, the government intends to focus on those tasks it considers most priority. Kulbergs also expressed hope to retain the position of Prime Minister after the next elections to the Saeima. According to him, this will depend on what results the government can achieve during its term.
