Romanian hacker Catalin Dragomir pleads guilty to selling US network access

Catalin Dragomir, a 45-year-old Romanian national, pleaded guilty in a US court to selling unauthorized access to an Oregon state government network, specifically the emergency management department. In June 2021, Dragomir obtained access to the network and negotiated a $3,000 sale in Bitcoin, providing samples of sensitive personal information to demonstrate the legitimacy of his claims. His actions, which also involved hacking into the networks of at least ten other victims and caused losses exceeding $250,000, led to his extradition to the US in January 2025 after his arrest in Romania in November 2024. Under US law, convictions for aggravated identity theft result in strict penalties, including a mandatory consecutive prison sentence.
