OpenAI reaches agreement with Pentagon on AI model deployment

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman announced late Friday that the company has reached an agreement with the Department of Defense (DoD) for the use of its artificial intelligence models, shortly after President Donald Trump declared that federal agencies must cease collaboration with rival Anthropic. This agreement includes key safety principles, such as prohibiting domestic mass surveillance and ensuring human oversight in military applications, which the DoD accepted, reflecting concerns that led to Anthropic being labeled a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.” This label, typically reserved for foreign adversaries, followed failed negotiations between Anthropic and the DoD, and prompted OpenAI to call for similar safety agreements to be offered to all AI companies to avoid further political escalation.
