Meros Triweekly Update #19 – Meros Cryptocurrency

Welcome to Meros’s Triweekly Update #19, covering 6/17/19 to 7/7/19! These three weeks were focused on the Consensus DAG, fixing bugs, and adding features to make Meros more usable. We did also merge the branch discussed in the last update.

The branch we discussed in the last update was the Transactions DAG redo. The new Transactions DAG is now fully working and part of Meros. Once we had our new, more efficient Transactions DAG, we had to redo the relevant RPC methods. Now, the RPC again supports creating Send and Data transactions. We’ve also updated the GUI accordingly.

Our work on the Consensus DAG is multi-faceted, and starts with Elements. In the past, we’ve only ever used Verifications. Now that we need more types of Elements, we had work to do. Thanks to the talented developer “Quelklef”, we now have support for multiple types of Elements, which let us build adaptive spam filters and more.

We also changed the behavior of Verifications in order to match the protocol. The protocol specifies any hash can be verified, even if there’s no matching transaction. Now, Verifications of unknown hashes successfully add, and if the Transaction is latter added, the Verifications are applied. This was also required to fix issue #50.

Issue #50 detailed how the Meros node failed to sync transactions which used other transactions created in the same block as inputs. This was the oldest issue we still had open and was marked critical for a couple of reasons. Not only is a currency which requires a Block between spending coins horrible, nodes which were online while the transactions were created performed fine. It’s only nodes which synced after the fact which had an error, which caused a chain split.

When it comes to making Meros more user friendly, we’ve added support for BIP 39, AKA Mnemonics. This enables Meros wallets to be represented by a 24 word seed phrase, which greatly increases how easy it is to backup and restore wallets. It also enables a large amount of existing libraries to generate Meros seed phrases.

Finally, our Discord has also been plentiful with discussion about the GUI. If you’re interested in observing these conversations, or even participating, we invite you to join!

That concludes our updates for these three weeks. As we have said every time, we‘re very excited for Meros’s future, and we will update you soon with our progress.
