OneCoin: masterminds of alleged Bitcoin fraud are on trial
Is OneCoin the biggest Bitcoin scam ever? It has not yet been finally decided, but the recent signs are pointing more and more in that direction. For the legal proceedings against the alleged masterminds of the cryptocurrency are progressing.
The lawsuits against the masterminds of the alleged Bitcoin scam OneCoin start in the US. The accused brother of the OneCoin founder recently confessed. In addition, an attorney involved must answer in court.
US investigators believe that the oneCoin founded in Bulgaria is a huge pyramid scam. The operators are said to have pulled out of their pockets about four billion US dollars. The confession of Konstantin Ignatov now seems to confirm these assumptions. Finally, he admitted to being involved in money laundering and fraud as part of his OneCoin activity.
Ignatov, arrested in March, entered his confession deal on October 4. The agreement reached however only on 12 November to the public. According to the BBC , Ignatov now has no further charges to fear. He still faces up to 90 years imprisonment. The British media also expressed the assumption that Ignatov could be included in the witness protection program. The court documents would therefore suggest that there is danger for him and his family.
Whereabouts of the “Cryptoqueen” still unclear
During the trial Ignatov also commented on the whereabouts of his sister. The “Cryptoqueen” known Dr. Ruja Ignatova is considered one of the founders of the alleged OneCoin Scams. Since 2017, however, it has disappeared from public view.
OneCoin, OneCoin: Masterminds of alleged Bitcoin fraud are on trial
Ignatov now stated that his sister is said to have lived in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. He told him that he had been “very tired”. Ignatova was also afraid of possible extradition to the FBI. In order to forestall the prosecutors, they should first have procured fake papers. Then she escaped via Vienna and Athens. Her brother stated that her current whereabouts were unknown to him as well.
OneCoin lawyer also in court
In addition to Ignatov, Mark S. Scott also has to answer to the US authorities. The lawyer is accused of washing $ 400 million for OneCoin. For this he used, among other things, accounts in Ireland. Konstantin Ignatov appeared as a witness in his trial.
According to the BBC , the US investigators assume that Scott used part of the funds received from OneCoin for the purchase of various luxury goods. In addition to a yacht, he is said to have bought a Ferrari and three houses.
Scott himself said that he did not know about the supposedly criminal nature of OneCoin. Since the rumors about OneCoin had also reached him, he asked a colleague to investigate OneCoin. Only when this should have given him the all-clear, he took up the collaboration with the cryptocurrency. The question of whether Scott knew or not could prove central to his process. He himself asserts his innocence in court.
Representatives and lawyers of the cryptocurrency reject all allegations of fraud.
