Invictus EMS Fund announces first purchase of solar cells

Invictus Capital has proudly launched its fifth fund to date with the Emerging Markets Solar (EMS) Fund initial funding having commenced on the 13th of November 2019.

The Fund aims to invest in a diversified portfolio of solar energy projects based in emerging markets and developing communities. Invictus Capital has initially partnered with Sun Exchange, a South African-based solar leasing platform, to facilitate the installation and monitoring of these projects to target IRR’s in the region of 11–12% p.a. Even though Sun Exchange projects are currently based out of South Africa, they are poised for further emerging market expansion, with a pipeline of projects under development to facilitate deal flow for the Fund.

The EMS Fund has officially secured its first solar project to date, with the last 2,220 of the total 14,112 solar cells available being purchased in an $84,000 solar project. The solar project is being installed at a local school in the Cape Town vicinity called Bellville High School and is forecast to generate 7.06 kWh per cell, at a 1st -year lease rate of ZAR1.20 per kWh. The project is currently poised to achieve an IRR of 11.28% p.a over its 20-year lifespan. Installation is currently underway and is due for completion at the end of January 2020.

Founded in 1937, Bellville High School is the 17th solar project that Sun Exchange has successfully launched. Investing in solar panels installed on schools is an effective long term investment strategy given the consistent income streams and reliability of the customer.

Sun Exchange ensures that the leasing cost of solar will always be cheaper than the cost of electricity from the local state supplier, Eskom. The school will therefore always be incentivized to use renewable solar energy as opposed to the expensive state-owned electricity supply.

Investors are able to participate in the seeding of this unique fund offering by visiting the EMS Fund page. Early contributors receive a 3% bonus on their unit allocation, with a minimum investment amount of $2,500, as a marketing incentive funded by Invictus Capital.

Once the fund is available in the investor portal in Q1 2020, no minimums will be enforced and daily liquidity will be available to token holders, much like the other open-ended fund offerings by Invictus Capital.

With the rapid advancements in solar technology and growing global demand for the deployment of clean energy solutions, we believe the Invictus Emerging Markets Solar Fund offers investors an exciting opportunity to invest in an alternative, uncorrelated investment class, whilst also contributing to the global fight against climate change.
