How Experts Often Fail To Find Creative Solutions To Problems Due To The Einstellung Effect
There’s a reason why the majority of innovation in the world comes from younger individuals —this group is often completely blissful of the many roadblocks which others before them have encountered on their way to creating similar innovations.
While it can be quite fulfilling to become a specialist and expert in an area, this often leads us to becoming pigeonholed in our way of viewing the world an unable to come up with truly unique and novel solutions. In fact, when novel and unique solutions are presented, they are often abhorred by the existing community which said solution pertains to.
Take Bitcoin, the decentralized cryptocurrency which has managed to survive the past 10 years and drive itself to a market cap of $200B. Despite the trials and tribulations which it has survived, most traditional economists have continually despised it and claimed that it will soon be going to $0. And yet, here it is, still kicking.
In sum, be careful of the “curse of knowledge” — it can prevent you from opening your mind to alternative perspectives / modalities of thinking and inhibit your growth. And if you’re ever working with an expert — whether it be a doctor, professor, etc… having them to confer their opinion with a colleague can serve as an easy means of attempting to mitigate this effect.
