With any form of gambling, a gambler must know that they are taking a chance. What does this chance mean really? We would first need to classify the activities that may be related to gambling.
Some games are combination of skill and luck where you have some control over your choices and then there are some games where you’re just hoping on the suitable outcome. Hence they become context of betting. The chance a gambler is taking or an outcome is a random event in physical world. Same needs to be simulated in case of online gambling by mathematical computations.
So, how does one know if the chance they are taking in the online world is fair?
In a typical online casino outcome of games like Roulette, Slot, Dice, Blackjack.. all is calculated by a random number generator. In this article I will walk you through about how such a random number generator could manipulate results, how do we know it is fair and lastly how we can prove that also! There’s a fancy name for it called Provably Fair.
The concept of ‘Provably Fair’ gaming eliminates the aforementioned fear of deception by using the same cryptographic technology behind Bitcoin. Technology makes it possible for every gambling transaction to be checked and verified to ensure that it was an honest, fair bet. As soon as a bet has ended, a player can go back and verify that it was fair.
- Before each bet, a random seed is generated on the server side (the website). A hash of this seed is made available to the player. A hash is the result of taking the original string of data (the seed) and scrambling it into a new string of data (the hash)
- A seed is then also randomly generated on the client (player’s) side. What this means is that the player also provides a random seed which is automatically (or manually) generated in the web browser. This seed cannot be seen or read by the website.
- Both the server and client seeds are used to generate a final random number. This means that both the player and the website are in control of generating the random outcome.
- After the player makes their bet, the website will reveal their original, unhashed seed
- Fairness : The player can now take both seeds and check that they both combine to generate the same outcome as the bet.
