Corona Virus and us – The Psychotic Monkey

Corona Virus and us
In 1918 there was a pandemic that swept the globe…the Spanish Flu. The total death toll is not known exactly but it’s somewhere between 10–30% of the population at the time. I sincerely hope that the most recent outbreak of the Corona Virus is just being over dramatized, but I fear that history has a habit of repeating itself. A century ago the governments of the world were under-reporting the cases and deaths while helping transport sick people across the globe, and today it appears to be a similar situation.
In China people are attempting to limit the spread of the disease by isolating themselves. It seems that this is really the only method we have of combating the spread of the disease until we develop a vaccine or a cure. Once a vaccine is developed it will take a lot of time, money and effort to distribute it to everyone who needs it.
I work for a cargo company and I fly to a new region of the world almost daily. So personally I’m torn between isolating myself and my family, and going to work to (potentially) contract and carry the disease. If we use history as a guideline I don’t think we should expect this pandemic to be ‘over’ anytime soon. This is going to take years to run it’s full course. We can’t expect to sit inside for years, but maybe those who don’t have to expose themselves to other members of the public could isolate themselves for 6–9 months to await a vaccine.
The most challenging aspect of this pandemic is not the disease itself, but the aftereffects. Simply maintaining our supply chains so that everyone has what they need will be a challenge, but the ‘frivolous’ part of the economic activity…things that aren’t necessities will suffer greatly when everyone’s isolating themselves. Tourism will suffer greatly, and everything that supports tourism will also feel a significant reduction in business.
This will initiate an economic recession much greater than those we’ve experienced in the recent past (in the last 90 years), and we’re going to need to cooperate in new and innovative ways in order to cope with this pandemic.
