CoinGecko has enhanced accessibility to crypto market data by enabling x402, an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase, to facilitate real-time, pay-per-use data transactions. This integration allows developers and AI agents, such as OpenClaw, to bypass traditional API subscriptions by paying for individual API calls using USDC. The x402 protocol, which leverages the long-standing but underutilized HTTP status code 402 (“Payment Required”), is being adopted by major data providers as a flexible alternative, supporting the growing trend of incorporating cryptocurrency micropayments into automated environments and open-source projects.
