Bitcoin Depot will start requiring customers to present personal IDs for every transaction at its ATMs as part of a voluntary effort to enhance compliance and prevent fraud, responding to mounting legal pressure from state prosecutors. This policy rollout follows a lawsuit filed by Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell earlier this month, which alleges that Bitcoin Depot knowingly facilitated scams targeting the elderly due to inadequate safeguards. The company, which previously required ID only during initial use, aims to combat issues such as account sharing and identity theft, emphasizing the importance of customer security as it operates around 8,800 ATMs across North America.
