Anthropic is currently in a dispute with the Pentagon over the use of its AI models, prompting a review of the company’s relationship with the Department of Defense (DoD). The startup is seeking guarantees that its models will not be utilized for autonomous weaponry or extensive surveillance, while the DoD insists on using them for all lawful purposes without restrictions. Last year, Anthropic was awarded a $200 million contract, becoming the only AI firm with models deployed on the agency’s classified networks; however, tensions, particularly related to its regulatory stance criticized by the Trump administration, exacerbate the situation. If the negotiations fail, the DoD may label Anthropic a “supply chain risk,” a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries, complicating its position further.
