A Beginner’s Guide to GPU Mining – Casey Blanche

Mining is the method by which digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are minted and released into circulation. Mining is also the method by which transactions are incorporated into the blockchain. Miners attempt to solve a proof-of-work puzzle that, given a successful solution, gives them the right to publish a block of new transactions and allocate new coins to themselves.

More succinctly, miners are rewarded for verifying transactions in a similar way that Visa or Mastercard approves your transactions when you pay with a credit card at the grocery store.

Mining can be performed using a CPU, GPU, FPGA, or ASIC device. Bitcoin is mined using dedicated ASIC devices that are not re-programmable. Ethereum is mined using GPU’s. Monero is mined using CPU’s. FPGA’s are programmable engineering devices that when loaded with “bitstreams”, can mine anything.

The information I will provide you with will allow you to earn digital assets by GPU mining.

To begin, you will need a dedicated PCIe Nvidia or AMD GPU with 2 GB of RAM or more (8 GB is recommended) installed in your computer. You should be sure that your PSU has enough watts and connections to handle the power requirements of the GPU. Next, you will need software to begin mining. As this is a beginner guide, I will direct you towards all-in-one mining software. The most popular and easy to use GPU mining software packages are: Nicehash, Minergate, Honeyminer, AIO Miner, and Cudo Miner. After a number of years of testing, I have determined that Cudo Miner has the best payout. Follow the instructions below to register, install and calibrate Cudo Miner:

  • Paste this link in your browser search bar and press enter- https://www.cudominer.com/?a=zh0_3pmEf
  • Click the “Sign Up and Download” button.
  • Enter an email and password to create an account.
  • You will receive an email regarding account verification, open your email and click the link provided to confirm your account.
  • Log in to Cudo Miner, select “Agree”, enter your account name, choose how you would like to be paid (most users will select Bitcoin).
  • Click “Download” to download the Cudo Miner software and then click “Get Started” (a console window will open that allows you to view your mining progress).
  • Open the Cudo Miner shortcut on your desktop and select “Settings”. Turn on third party miners, turn on Windows Defender exclusion (there are additional options for turning off mining when on battery power or when the computer is in use).
  • Select “Miner” on the left option bar of the Cudo Miner software. Select the “Enable” button to enable GPU mining (do not enable CPU mining).
  • The software will begin mining the most profitable coin for you. To stop mining, select the “Disable” button underneath the diamond icon near the top left of the mining window.
  • To the right of the Diamond icon near the top of the window, you will see your projected monthly earnings and GPU temperature. If your GPU exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit, you will need to install MSI Afterburner to configure your GPU fan speed.
  • If you go back to the console window in your web browser, you will see transactions on the left. Click “Transactions” then “Withdraw” to withdraw your mined coins to an external wallet or exchange for trade (There is a minimum withdrawal amount, so you may need to mine for one month before transferring funds).

In future articles I will demonstrate how to trade and store your digital assets.
