Anthropic's Claude model builds Rust C compiler with 16 AI agents, costing under $20k

Anthropic recently conducted an experiment where 16 parallel Claude agents collaborated to build a Rust-based C compiler from scratch, which was successfully accomplished over nearly 2,000 sessions in 14 days for under $20,000. This project showcases the power of autonomous software development using AI agents, which allowed for the continuous coordination and productivity of multiple agents without human intervention. Each AI agent was tasked with small jobs and they operated within a managed setup using shared repositories and fresh Docker containers to maintain a robust workflow. This approach aligns with the emerging trend of employing AI agents for complex software development tasks, such as building cross-architecture compatible compilers.
